Default Moving to WB

Hi guys,

My family and I are moving to WB over the summer. We don't have an exact date. My wife is taking a job at one of the local colleges. We're coming from Vermont.

However, we're long time PAers. We were both born in Allentown, I grew up in Muncy (near Williamsport), and we spent many years in Pittsburgh. I've ridden many trails on the western side of the state and I'm looking forward to what NEPA has to offer.

I ride an old school Schwin High Plains. Don't laugh. Read the MTBR comments on it. They make me smile. I keep talking about "oh, I'm riding enough to get/justify a new bike". Yet, oddly, I don't.

We'll definitely check out the Frances Slocum rides for some meet and greet, once we get into town (and get a babysitter!). I've been very happy to see all the group rides and trail work maintenance posts running around on MTBR. It looks like there is a nice MTB community in the area.

Best,
Mark

Hey Mark, welcome to the forum and NEPA. Yep, as you stated we have a great community as far as mountain biking with many great clubs and areas to ride. Keep in touch and try to follow the board as much as you can (you need 4 posts to go "Unmoderated")

As far as your bike, lol...I ride a '84 Schwinn Paramount Road bike that every year Stine here tries to talk me into a new bike. Like you, I'm ready, but for some reason that old bike keeps me in it's clutches.

Once again, welcome and by all means stay in touch!

Kevin

I'll second the welcome-back Mark.

I'm newer to PA than you, I moved in last July from Austin TX - after 10 years in TX it was rough dealing with winter but I think that is NOT something you are going to have issues with.

These WVMTBA "critters" have been some of the best people to hook up, definitely.

As to bikes: You know, no matter what bling-bling somebody has, it never fails that their smiles are not any bigger or longer lasting that the kids with the machine that has been serving them for years and years.

It's pretty funny. A bike shop owner in Pittsburgh (the old West Liberty Cycles ... there's a new owner now) ran into me at a great local riding spot (Bavington). I was with a friend of mine who had known this guy for awhile. This was around 2005. My bike is a 1990. Anyway, the shop owner said something like .... completely dead panned .... "there have been some advances in bikes in the past 15 years". We all got a great chuckle. My only real upgrades were clip pedals ... which I bought at that shop. And, they might be worth more than the bike (to some ... maybe not to me ).

I'll try to keep chiming in over here to meet some folks. I don't think I'll actually be in NEPA until the beginning of August ... although early July might be a possibility.

Best to you all,
Mark

Lol...I have the Paramount as upgraded as one can do to that era bike. (Even have 8spd STI's on a 7 spd cluster), but it works for me!

Great to here Mark...A lot of neat things going on in July here with the group, so hopefully you'll be here in time!

Funny I have a bike for every application! He'll I even own two spin bikes! My downhill rig runs about $6000. But my favorie two bikes are my Steel single speed road and mt bikes! With just a back brake and one gear I'd say I'm the one behind on technology!! Lol... How new does it have to be? I'm a 1971 and I run pretty good!!

Just a quick note:

We are still coming to WB. We just haven't found/settled our housing yet. We're currently living with family in Pittsburgh. However, my wife starts in August (one way or the other). I should definitely be riding by September ... after only two rides in VT and none yet in Pgh, I'm feeling deprived.

Looking forward meeting folks and riding!

Best,
Mark
